On the evening of April 9, 2024, Anthony Lamar Love Jr., a 44-year-old male employee of United Parcel Service, was fatally shot as he was leaving his job at a UPS facility in Birmingham, Alabama. The shooting occurred around 6:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the facility located on Inglenook Lane. Love was walking to his car after finishing his shift when he was confronted by an assailant and shot multiple times.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities quickly determined that the attack was not a random act of violence but rather a targeted killing. The initial investigation revealed that the shooter fled the scene immediately after the incident. For a time, the perpetrator remained at large, and Birmingham police sought assistance from the public for any information that might lead to an arrest.
In a significant development, investigators identified two suspects in connection with the homicide. Damien McDaniel, 22, and Charles Nance, 41, were subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Anthony Lamar Love Jr. The investigation led authorities to believe that Love's death was the result of a murder-for-hire plot, elevating the charges against the accused.
The case against Damien McDaniel grew even more complex as he was implicated in a string of other violent crimes, including multiple homicides and two separate mass shootings in the Birmingham area. Charles Nance is alleged to have provided information to McDaniel that led to Love being targeted. Both McDaniel and Nance are being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond. McDaniel is in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections.
