On a June morning in 2016, in Huntsville, Alabama, the life of 16-year-old Mustafa Bearfield, a Black male, was cut short. On June 21st, Mustafa was near a convenience store when he was fatally shot by Jonathan Scott, a 52-year-old bread delivery truck driver. The tragic encounter was sparked by the alleged theft of a lunchbox from Scott's truck.
Scott testified that after he saw Bearfield take the lunchbox, he wanted to scare the teenager into returning it.
He stated that he yelled at Bearfield to drop the item, and when the teen gave him a 'screw you look' and started to run, Scott fired his gun multiple times. He claimed he was aiming over Bearfield's head from a distance of about 225 feet. One of the bullets, however, struck the unarmed teen in the back of the head, killing him. Bearfield was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jonathan Scott was arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. Initially charged with murder, the charge was later reduced to manslaughter. During his trial, Scott's defense attorney argued for a lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide, asserting that Scott had not been aware of the risk of his actions but should have been. Scott himself expressed remorse, stating, 'It was just a cooler. It was not worth a kid's life. He was just a boy. Why did I even try to scare him?'
The prosecution contended that Scott acted recklessly and with conscious disregard for human life. After less than two hours of deliberation, the jury found Jonathan Scott guilty of manslaughter. The verdict indicated that they believed Scott had acted recklessly in causing Mustafa Bearfield's death. Following his conviction, Scott faced a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
