Tavaris Williams, a 23-year-old male, tragically lost his life to gun violence in Selma, Alabama, on the evening of October 15, 2016. The incident that led to his untimely death unfolded on the 2500 block of Etheridge Street, where officers responded to reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Williams suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
In the days following the fatal shooting, the Selma Police Department launched an intensive investigation. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. Javarius Levon Johnson, who was 20 years old at the time, and Charles Oldes, then 23, were taken into custody and subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with Williams's death. The charges suggest that the homicide occurred during the commission of another felony, which elevates the severity of the alleged crime.
Following their arrests, both Johnson and Oldes were processed and held at the Dallas County Jail. The legal proceedings against the two men commenced, marking the beginning of a long road to justice for Tavaris Williams and his grieving family. The community was left to grapple with the loss of a young life and the circumstances that led to such a violent act.
