In the spring of 2023, the life of 28-year-old JeVon Nakia Hall was tragically cut short in his hometown of Selma, Alabama. On the afternoon of Saturday, April 29, gunfire erupted in the parking lot of a shopping center located in the 1300 block of Highland Avenue. When Selma Police Department officers arrived at the scene near a Hibbett Sports store, they discovered Hall unresponsive, suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement began their investigation, though no suspects were immediately identified. The community mourned the loss of Hall, and his family laid him to rest with a graveside service at Camp Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Tyler, Alabama, on May 6, 2023.
For nearly a year, the case remained under active investigation. A significant breakthrough occurred on March 5, 2024, when the U.S. Marshals located and arrested 36-year-old Kenyada Dukes in Phoenix, Arizona. A grand jury had indicted Dukes for the capital murder of JeVon Hall. The investigation also led to another suspect, 36-year-old Stephen Wood, who faced the same charge of capital murder. Both Dukes and Wood were also charged with four counts of shooting into an unoccupied building. A third individual, Richard Surles, was also implicated and faced charges of attempted murder and first-degree robbery.
As the legal process began to unfold, the suspects started to face the judicial system for their alleged roles in the shooting. Stephen Woods appeared in court to answer to the charges brought against him. In a related proceeding, Richard Surles was sentenced by a judge to a 20-year sentence with a mandatory five-year portion to be served in a state penitentiary.
