On a late summer evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 37-year-old Dariuse Dewayne Benson was tragically cut short. On August 25, 2022, Benson was fatally wounded in a hail of rifle fire along Finley Boulevard. The shooting, which resulted in the city's 91st homicide of the year, also left four other individuals wounded.
The violent outburst occurred shortly before 10 p.m. in the 100 block of Finley Boulevard West.
Officers from the North Precinct were dispatched to the scene following a report of a person shot. Upon their arrival, they discovered Benson, a male, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Shortly after the initial incident, a second, related shooting took place at the intersection of 1st Street North and 16th Avenue North. In this subsequent event, an adult male and an adult female sustained gunshot wounds. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, and they were transported to a local hospital for treatment. In total, the chaotic night saw one fatality and six injuries across the two connected shootings.
As of the latest available information, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the death of Dariuse Dewayne Benson, and no suspects have been officially named. The Birmingham Police Department continues its investigation into the deadly shooting.
