On a Saturday evening in Mobile, Alabama, the life of 19-year-old Willie Thomas Jr., a Black/African American male, was cut short by gunfire. The fatal incident unfolded on March 11, 2023, at approximately 7:33 p.m. in the parking lot of a Quick Stop Food Mart on Overlook Road. Officers from the Mobile Police Department were alerted to the shooting by someone passing by and arrived to find Thomas suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The violence that evening also left two others injured. Another 19-year-old male was discovered in the parking lot with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. A third victim, a 20-year-old male, was also wounded in the incident and taken to the hospital in a private vehicle with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
In the wake of the shooting, the Mobile Police Department launched a homicide investigation that is still active. Authorities have made appeals to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest in the case.
