On a February morning in Birmingham, Alabama, the body of Mahogany Jaquise Jackson, a 20-year-old Black female, was discovered. Responding to a 911 call on Sunday, February 26, 2023, police found her on the side of the road in the 1700 block of Laurel Avenue SW. She had been shot to death.
The investigation into her killing uncovered a horrific sequence of events. Authorities allege that Jackson was kidnapped from her apartment on February 25th.
She was then reportedly taken to another apartment in the Tarrant-Huffman area, where she was subjected to a brutal sexual assault and torture. It is further alleged that parts of this assault were livestreamed on social media. Following the assault, she was shot and her body was abandoned. Investigators believe the motive may have been retaliation for a prior crime that the suspects believed Jackson was involved in.
In the wake of the discovery, law enforcement officials moved swiftly, and a number of individuals were taken into custody. Seven people have been arrested in connection with the heinous crime. The suspects facing charges that include capital murder, kidnapping, and sodomy are Teja Lewis, Brandon Pope, Francis Harris, Si’Niya McCall, Blair Green, Giovonnie Clapp, and another man. They are currently being held without bond as the legal process moves forward.
