In the early morning hours of December 22, 2022, the life of 43-year-old Shundra Denise McCray Vines was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. Just before 1 a.m., a Shot Spotter system, designed to detect and locate gunfire, alerted the Birmingham Police Department to the sound of multiple rounds being fired in the Ensley neighborhood, specifically in the 2500 block of 24th Street.
A West Precinct officer who was already patrolling in the vicinity was able to arrive at the scene
within minutes of the alert. There, at the end of a driveway, the officer discovered Vines inside her running red Pontiac Vibe. The driver's side window of the vehicle was shattered, and it was apparent that Vines had sustained gunshot wounds. Despite the quick response, her injuries were fatal, and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced her dead at the scene. Investigators determined that a total of 11 rounds had been fired.
As of late 2023, authorities were still seeking assistance from the public to solve the homicide of the mother of one. No suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been announced in connection with her shooting death. A reward of up to $5,000 has been offered for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death remains ongoing.
