On an evening in Birmingham, Alabama, a dispute that simmered on social media erupted into a chaotic and tragic scene of real-world violence, claiming the life of 21-year-old Asia Alyce Poole. The young mother was shot and killed on August 20, 2024, outside the Monarch Ridge apartment complex on Gallant Drive, where an argument escalated into a physical altercation and then a massive shootout.
When Birmingham police responded to calls of shots fired at approximately 10 p.m., they discovered Poole unresponsive on the ground, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue.
The conflict reportedly stemmed from an ongoing disagreement between Poole and Janiyah Hendrix, 19, concerning a man. This dispute led to a physical fight between the two women in the apartment complex parking lot, an event that was partially captured and streamed on Facebook Live videos. The altercation quickly drew in multiple other individuals and escalated dramatically. In the ensuing chaos, it is estimated that an astounding 168 shots were fired from various weapons, including ARs, pistols, and Dracos, turning the residential area into a battlefield. Another man, identified as Poole's best friend, was also injured by the gunfire but was expected to survive.
The investigation into Poole's death, aided significantly by the social media footage, led to a series of arrests. Janiyah Hendrix was taken into custody and charged with first-degree auto theft after allegedly fleeing the scene in Poole's car. Her brother, Justin Jamond Hendrix, 20, and another man, Taylor McCloud, 22, were both charged with murder and attempted murder. They are being held without bond. A fourth individual, 20-year-old Aacoreyah Denae Woods, was also arrested in connection with the deadly shooting.
As the investigation continued, a fifth arrest was made, that of a 17-year-old male who is also facing a murder charge. Authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that more individuals may have been involved in the shooting. During a preliminary hearing, it was revealed that between six and ten people were armed at the scene. The defendants' legal counsel has suggested that someone in the breezeway where Poole was standing may have fired first, a claim that investigators have disputed based on the lack of shell casings found in that specific area.
