In a tragic turn of events on a February afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, a dispute between two women over a shared connection to a man ended in the death of Iesha Mayhand, age 24. The conflict arose when Mayhand went to the home of Josalyn Nicole Evans. Mayhand was seeking out Patrick Lewis, the father of her baby, to ask for money for diapers. Lewis was in a relationship with Evans at the time.
When Mayhand arrived at Evans's residence on February 12, 2016, she was met with immediate
hostility from Evans. An argument ensued, and Mayhand left the porch and moved into the yard. Evans then retrieved a pistol and followed her. As Mayhand was attempting to leave the property, Evans shot her twice. One of the bullets struck Mayhand in the head, causing her death.
Josalyn Nicole Evans was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Ieshia Mayhand. The case went to trial in the Jefferson County Circuit Court in June 2017. Evans was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison. She later appealed her conviction and sentence. However, on May 18, 2018, the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals upheld the original conviction, ensuring that Evans would serve her sentence for the killing of Iesha Mayhand.
