In the spring of 2022, a quiet street in Birmingham, Alabama, became the scene of a heart-wrenching tragedy that claimed the lives of a grandmother and her young grandson. On the evening of Sunday, April 3rd, family members grew worried when they were unable to get in touch with 62-year-old Cynthia Delane Burt. Their concern prompted a call for a welfare check at her home on Hillman Drive.
Responding Birmingham police officers, met by the anxious relatives, were forced to make entry into
the residence. Inside, a grim discovery awaited them in a back room: the unresponsive bodies of Cynthia and her 3-year-old grandson, Desmond Burt Jr. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators quickly determined that their deaths were not from natural causes, noting injuries consistent with a homicide, specifically blunt force trauma.
As the investigation unfolded, a person of interest was taken into custody for questioning. This individual was later identified as Cynthia's 31-year-old son and the father of the deceased child, Desmond Burt Sr. He had reportedly been present with other family members outside the home when the police initially arrived.
Following questioning, authorities announced the arrest of Desmond Burt Sr., charging him with two counts of capital murder in the deaths of his mother and his son. He was subsequently booked into the Jefferson County Jail and held without bond.
