In the late hours of a Friday night in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 43-year-old Kanisha Nicole Fuller was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire. On April 10, 2020, officers responded to a gunfire detection alert in the Germania Park area and discovered Fuller inside an unmarked police vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into Fuller's death quickly revealed a complex and ultimately
fatal love triangle involving two Birmingham police detectives. Fuller was in the vehicle with off-duty detective Mario Theodore White when the shooting occurred. The ensuing investigation identified the suspect as 39-year-old Alfreda Janapril Fluker, a 15-year veteran of the Birmingham Police Department and White's longtime romantic partner and police partner. The motive for the shooting was determined to be domestic in nature.
Fluker, who was also off-duty at the time of the incident, was arrested at her home the following morning. The investigation was handed over to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation due to the involvement of police officers. Fluker was subsequently charged with capital murder for the death of Kanisha Nicole Fuller and the attempted murder of Mario Theodore White.
In November 2022, a jury convicted Alfreda Fluker of capital murder and attempted murder. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Fluker's actions were cold and calculated when she found Fuller and White together and emptied her service weapon into the vehicle. The defense contended that Fluker was overcome with anger and acted in the heat of passion. In February 2023, Fluker was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
