It was September 19, 2024, when 35-year-old Diontranet Tinae Brown, a beloved mother and a woman known for her ambition and vibrant spirit, found her life tragically ended. She was inside a bar on 9th Street North when gunfire erupted, and she was struck. First responders rushed her to UAB Hospital, but her injuries proved fatal.
Diontranet was a woman of accomplishment and dedication.
A graduate of Wenonah High School, she had pursued higher education with vigor, earning an associate's degree in funeral services, a bachelor's in management, and a master's in business administration. She was known professionally in her work at Alabama Power and various funeral homes, but her greatest joy was her son, Kaleb. Her sudden death left a void in the lives of her family and friends, who remembered her as a funny, outgoing, and loving individual with a beautiful smile.
The investigation into her death led authorities to a suspect already on their radar for a string of violent crimes that had plagued the city. Damien McDaniel, 22, was identified and charged with intentional murder in connection with Diontranet Brown's death. McDaniel's alleged involvement in Diontranet's death was part of a much larger and more terrifying crime spree. As the investigation deepened, the number of homicides linked to McDaniel grew, eventually reaching a staggering total of 18 alleged murders over a 14-month period. He has pleaded not guilty to the numerous charges against him, and his trial for one of the mass shootings is scheduled to begin in April of the following year.
