In the late summer evening of August 28, 2024, a dispute in Birmingham, Alabama, turned deadly for 40-year-old Diana Lajoyce McCall. The Black/African American woman was found by Birmingham Police Department officers lying on a sidewalk in the 7700 block of 5th Avenue South with a gunshot wound. The events leading to the shooting reportedly began with a physical altercation involving two other women and a man.
McCall became engaged in a confrontation with the same man, who then shot her
before making his escape. She was rushed to UAB Hospital by emergency medical personnel for treatment of her critical injuries. For nearly two weeks, she fought for her life, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries on September 11, 2024.
While authorities have stated that they have identified everyone involved in the incident, no arrests have been announced. The Birmingham Police homicide detectives are preparing to present the findings of their investigation to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. The case remains under investigation.
