On August 7, 2022, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Birmingham Police officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 800 block of 2nd Avenue North. Upon arrival, they discovered 19-year-old Ja'Kia Winston lying unresponsive in a parking lot, suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced her deceased at the scene.
