In the fall of 2016, a Birmingham, Alabama community was shaken by the tragic death of Martha 'Sheree' Bryant, a 30-year-old Black woman and devoted mother of five. On October 11th, she was found in her home, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The devastating discovery was made while two of her children were present in the house.
The investigation into her death quickly revealed a history of domestic turmoil.
Friends and family described a woman trying to escape a volatile relationship with her boyfriend, 32-year-old Jason Harris. Bryant had reportedly expressed her desire to end the relationship, a decision Harris was unwilling to accept. Her attempts to distance herself from him were met with his persistent and ultimately fatal refusal to let her go.
The events that culminated in the tragedy began to unfold in the days prior. An argument had reportedly taken place between Bryant and Harris on Saturday, October 8th. This confrontation appears to have been a grim prelude to the violence that would follow. In the aftermath of her death, law enforcement located Jason Harris in his car. He was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing a grim and abrupt end to the investigation. No arrests were made as the sole suspect had taken his own life.
