On a cold morning in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of a 43-year-old Black woman, Genise Carter, came to a tragic and violent end. Her body was discovered on January 25, 2024, at the end of a desolate street, initiating a homicide investigation that would uncover a harrowing story of a desperate fight for survival.

Surveillance footage from a Shell gas station, dated January 21, captured the beginning of her ordeal. In the early morning hours, Carter was brutally beaten and kidnapped. For thirty agonizing minutes, she desperately fought for her life, pleading with bystanders for help, but her cries went unanswered.
Two suspects were identified in connection with the abduction and murder: 21-year-old Jayden Gildersleeve and 62-year-old Michael Spellman. Authorities charged both men with capital murder and kidnapping. Surveillance video reportedly showed Gildersleeve forcing Carter into a vehicle at gunpoint, while Spellman was also implicated in the abduction. Despite her courageous attempts to escape, she was ultimately overpowered.
During a preliminary hearing on March 12, a Jefferson County District Judge ruled there was sufficient probable cause to forward the cases against Gildersleeve and Spellman to a grand jury for indictment consideration. Both men were ordered to be held without bond. The motive for the crime has not been publicly released, though it was stated that Carter knew one of her alleged attackers.
