In the early morning hours of a Friday in June 2012, tragedy struck in Southwest Detroit, forever altering the life of a hardworking 39-year-old man. Mark Tompkins, a truck driver, was fiercely proud of his Ford Crown Victoria, a car he had saved diligently to purchase. His affection for the vehicle was so profound that he took extra precautions to protect it, even sleeping in a room directly above where it was parked and placing orange traffic cones around it.
This vigilance stemmed from a previous incident where the rims had been stolen, making him ever more determined to safeguard his prized possession.
Just after 1 a.m., the sound of someone attempting to steal his beloved car roused Tompkins from his sleep. Without a moment's hesitation, he ran outside in his underwear to confront the thief. In a senseless act of violence, the suspect shot Tompkins in the head. The assailant then callously drove away in the stolen Crown Victoria, leaving a gruesome scene behind as the car's tires rolled through the victim's blood.
Emergency services were called, and Tompkins was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 3:30 a.m. Detroit Police homicide detectives immediately began their investigation, canvassing the neighborhood and going door-to-door in the hopes of finding anyone who might have seen or heard something that could lead to the perpetrator.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police followed the bloody tire tracks left by the stolen vehicle as far as they could, but the trail went cold, and they were left with no immediate leads. The community was left in shock and mourning for a man who lost his life over a material possession he had worked so hard to obtain. His girlfriend, Sharon Wilson, expressed her profound grief, lamenting his deep attachment to the car that ultimately led to his untimely and violent death.
