On a summer evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of Maurice Arrinjuando Turner, a 52-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On July 17, 2024, Turner was discovered shot to death on the kitchen floor of his apartment, a victim of gun violence. Remembered by loved ones as the "life of the party" who "didn't bother nobody," his sudden death left a void in the community.
In the months that followed, the investigation into Turner's homicide continued.
A significant break in the case came nearly eight months later, on March 17, 2025. While investigating a burglary, Birmingham police officers stumbled upon a grim situation where a woman was being held against her will and had been sexually assaulted. The man they arrested in connection with this crime was Christopher Burl.
During the course of their investigation, authorities realized that Burl was also the suspect they were seeking in the murder of Maurice Turner. In addition to the charges of rape, sodomy, and kidnapping from the incident in which he was apprehended, Burl was charged with capital murder for the shooting death of Turner. He is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail. Surveillance footage from the night of the murder had captured an SUV fleeing the scene, a detail that was part of the ongoing investigation.
