On December 25, 2021, at approximately 11:15 p.m., Birmingham Police Department officers responded to multiple ShotSpotter alerts indicating numerous shots fired near the 40th Street Grocery Convenience Store at 1200 40th Street Ensley. Upon arrival, they discovered 22-year-old Donvan Mykal Cash lying unresponsive near the entrance of the store, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced him deceased.
