In the summer of 2022, the life of 19-year-old Dwight Deangelo Thomas Jr. was cut tragically short in a hail of gunfire on a Birmingham, Alabama street. On the evening of July 25th, officers from the Birmingham Police Department were dispatched to the 700 block of 6th Avenue West around 8:55 p.m. after receiving multiple ShotSpotter alerts, indicating that numerous rounds had been fired in the area.
Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene.
An Audi SUV was parked along the road with one of its doors ajar. Inside the vehicle, they found Thomas, who was unresponsive. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel were called to the scene, but it was too late; Thomas was pronounced deceased.
The subsequent investigation by homicide detectives revealed a chaotic and violent exchange. Evidence recovered at the scene indicated that as many as 50 to 60 rounds had been discharged, with some of the casings suggesting the use of fully automatic weapons. This led investigators to believe that multiple shooters were likely involved in the incident that claimed Thomas's life. Further complicating the case, it was determined that the Audi SUV in which Thomas was found had been reported stolen from Shelby County.
Despite the intensity of the shootout and the significant amount of evidence left behind, the motive for the shooting remains unclear. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Dwight Deangelo Thomas Jr., and the investigation into his homicide continues.
