On July 2, 2024, 34-year-old Perez Demarco Moreland was fatally shot during an assault in the 7800 block of 3rd Avenue South in Birmingham, Alabama. This incident was part of a surge in violence that saw five homicides in Birmingham within the first five days of July. In response to this uptick in violence, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin issued a statement urging residents to de-escalate conflicts and avoid resorting to gun violence.
