On a Tuesday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 44-year-old Jerry Kennedy, a Black/African American male, was cut short by gunfire. The incident, which occurred on October 2, 2018, unfolded at a tire shop following a dispute.
According to Birmingham police, Kennedy was involved in an altercation with another man, identified as 48-year-old Lee Roy McCullough. The argument escalated, tragically ending with shots being fired. Kennedy was struck and, despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, succumbed to his injuries.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, McCullough fled the scene, sparking a manhunt. The investigation led authorities to issue a capital murder warrant for his arrest. The charge was elevated to capital murder because evidence suggested McCullough had fired into a moving vehicle.
Less than two weeks later, on October 15, 2018, the search for McCullough came to an end. Acting on information, U.S. Marshals located and apprehended him in Gould, Arkansas. Following his arrest, McCullough was held in jail pending extradition back to Alabama to face the capital murder charge for his alleged role in the death of Jerry Kennedy.
