On April 3, 2022, at approximately 5:12 p.m., Birmingham Police Department officers conducted a welfare check at a residence located at 4909 Hillman Drive Southwest in Birmingham, Alabama. Upon forced entry into the home, they discovered the bodies of 3-year-old Desmond Burt Jr. and his 62-year-old grandmother, Cynthia Burt, in a back room. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel.
