In the late hours of a Saturday evening, a dispute at a Twin Peaks restaurant on University Drive in Huntsville, Alabama, tragically cut short the life of 23-year-old Rayshun Markelle Bates. On November 9, 2024, what began as a verbal disagreement between several people spiraled into violence, resulting in a shooting that left Bates fatally wounded. He was transported from the scene to Huntsville Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Two other individuals were also injured during the incident. An off-duty Huntsville Police Department officer was present and working a security detail at the establishment when the shooting occurred. The officer did discharge his weapon, but it was determined that his gunfire did not strike anyone.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency took the lead in the investigation that followed the deadly encounter. Their work quickly led to the identification of a suspect, and 21-year-old Jeremiah Matkins of Huntsville was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of Rayshun Markelle Bates. Matkins was subsequently booked into the Madison County Jail.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Matkins sought to have the case against him dismissed, pursuing a self-defense claim under the 'Stand Your Ground' law. He was granted an immunity hearing to present his case. However, after consideration, a Madison County judge denied his request for immunity. Following his arrest, Matkins was initially held on a $50,000 bond, which was later set at $100,000. He was eventually released from jail after posting bond.
Rayshun Markelle Bates, a resident of Decatur, Alabama, was a father to a daughter. Born on August 3, 2001, he was active in his church, the United Pentecostal Jubilee House of Prayer, where he was a member of the youth choir and played the drums. His funeral service was held at his church, and he was laid to rest in Sterrs Cemetery.
