Devonte Marnez "Vonte" Vance, a 26-year-old man from Huntsville, Alabama, was killed in a shooting during the early morning hours of July 19, 2026. Online sources do not provide reliable information identifying his race or ethnicity. Huntsville police said officers were called just before 1 a.m. to a business in the 600 block of Blake Bottom Road after a shooting was reported. When officers arrived, they found Vance and 33-year-old Austin Taylor Morris of Toney suffering from gunshot wounds. Vance was pronounced dead at the scene, while Morris was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

Investigators with the Huntsville Police Department's Major Crimes Unit determined that Vance, Morris and a third individual had been involved in an altercation that escalated into gunfire. Police did not publicly provide a detailed account of what started the confrontation, who possessed or fired particular weapons, or the sequence in which the two men were shot. Authorities described the third individual as someone involved in the confrontation and detained him at the scene for questioning. Police did not publicly identify that person, explaining that his name would not be released unless criminal charges were filed.

The investigation remained focused on determining the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter rather than immediately assigning criminal responsibility. Huntsville police said their findings were being presented to the Madison County District Attorney's Office so prosecutors could review the evidence and decide whether charges were warranted. Reports published in the days after the shooting continued to describe the unidentified third individual as having been detained and questioned, but they did not report that he had been formally arrested or charged in connection with the deaths.

As of the most recent publicly available information located through August 11, 2026, no suspect had been publicly named and no murder, manslaughter or other homicide charge had been announced in connection with Vance's death. There also was no public indication that a grand jury proceeding, criminal trial or conviction had occurred. Because the third man was never publicly identified by police, available reports do not establish whether investigators ultimately considered him a suspect, a potential self-defense claimant, a witness, or someone whose actions did not justify criminal charges.

Vance's death left his family and friends mourning a young father who was remembered by loved ones as caring, affectionate and devoted to the people around him. His funeral was held August 1 at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Harvest following visitation services in Huntsville. At the service, people connected with the funeral home and community used the loss as an opportunity to speak about the consequences of gun violence and the need to prevent similar deaths. Vance was later interred at Valley View Memorial Gardens. His death, together with Morris's, remained tied to an unresolved investigation into the Blake Bottom Road confrontation, with the ultimate charging decision resting with investigators and the Madison County District Attorney's Office.
