A simmering dispute over a mere five dollars tragically culminated in the death of 20-year-old Anthony Williams, a male, on a Sunday morning inside one of Washington, D.C.'s busiest transportation hubs. The fatal encounter unfolded on the Metro platform at Union Station on January 26, 2020, during the morning rush hour. An argument between Williams and an acquaintance, 23-year-old Angel Moses, reportedly ignited over a previous unpaid five-dollar transaction for synthetic marijuana, spiraled
into a physical altercation.
The confrontation turned deadly when Moses stabbed Williams in the left shoulder. Officers were called to the 700 block of 1st Street, NE, around 8:18 a.m. for a report of a stabbing and found Williams unresponsive on the platform. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived on the scene but found no signs of life. The incident disrupted Red Line services as police launched a homicide investigation. Investigators quickly determined that the stabbing was not a random act of violence but the result of a dispute between individuals who knew each other.
Within hours of the incident, police made two arrests. Angel Moses, of no fixed address, was apprehended and charged with second-degree murder while armed. Another individual, 29-year-old Edward Everstine, also of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact. Court documents revealed that he was found in possession of a kitchen knife. In October 2021, Moses, who was 25 at the time of sentencing, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed and was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison. During the hearing, members of Williams's family delivered emotional statements, expressing their grief and accusing Moses of showing no remorse for her actions.
