In the winter of 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the late morning calm in the Barry Farm neighborhood of Southeast Washington, D.C., forever altering the course of several lives. On January 18th, 32-year-old Terrence Allen, a male resident of Southeast Washington, was driving a vehicle with two other men. As they were leaving the Stanton Glen Apartments around 11:10 a.m., their car was intercepted by another vehicle.
From the passenger seat of the pursuing car, a man unleashed a barrage of 34 shots from a rifle into the back of Allen's vehicle.
The hail of bullets found its mark, striking all three occupants of Allen's car. First responders rushed to the chaotic scene on the 3000 block of Stanton Road SE. All three victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment. While the two other men sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Terrence Allen succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Tragically, investigators later determined that Allen was not the intended target of the violent assault. The actual target was one of the other men in the car with him, who had an ongoing dispute with the assailants.
The perpetrators, identified as Delonta Stevenson, 28, and his nephew Vorreze Thomas, Jr., 26, attempted to flee the scene immediately after the shooting. Their escape was short-lived as a nearby Metropolitan Police Department officer heard the gunshots and initiated a pursuit. The chase ended when Stevenson and Thomas crashed their vehicle at the intersection of 29th and Erie Street SE. Although they managed to escape on foot, their flight was ultimately futile. Investigators recovered the murder weapon and Thomas's cellphone from the crashed car.
A month later, on February 17, 2021, both Delonta Stevenson and Vorreze Thomas were apprehended and taken into custody. They faced a litany of charges, including first-degree murder while armed, conspiracy, and assault with intent to kill. Following a 13-day trial, a jury found both men guilty of the charges against them. In May 2024, their legal journey concluded with lengthy prison sentences. Delonta Stevenson received a sentence of 85 years, while Vorreze Thomas was sentenced to 53 years for his role in the murder of Terrence Allen.
