On a Sunday afternoon, March 1, 2020, in Washington, D.C., 13-year-old Malachi Lukes was walking with friends to play basketball in the Shaw neighborhood, just a few blocks from his home. The young student at Cardozo Education Campus was looking forward to his 14th birthday, which was only four days away. Tragically, he would not live to celebrate it.
