On June 16, 2015, 15-year-old Malek Dayvon Mercer was tragically shot and killed in Washington, D.C. The incident occurred on the 2800 block of 28th Street, SE. Mercer, a student at Ballou High School, was reportedly shot in the neck after an altercation with the suspect, Derryck Decuir. According to the prosecution, the conflict began when Mercer "snickered" at Decuir after a comment about Mercer's belt. Enraged, Decuir followed Mercer off a bus and shot him.
