On a warm evening in Washington, D.C., 53-year-old Jeremy Black was walking home with his wife and friends after enjoying a dinner out. The date was June 29, 2021, and the group was on the 1400 block of R Street, Northwest, when the sound of what they initially thought were fireworks pierced the air. It quickly became apparent that the popping sounds were not a celebration, but the terrifying reality of a shootout between two groups of people.
In the chaos of the crossfire, Black was struck by a stray bullet. He tragically died at the scene.
Jeremy Black, a beloved husband and father of two sons, had dedicated his life to international development and promoting understanding between people. He was a former Peace Corps volunteer who had served in the Comoros Islands and later worked for the Peace Corps in the Office of the Inspector General. His sudden and senseless death sent shockwaves through his community and family.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify a suspect. In November 2021, Dearay Anthony Wilson, then 25 years old, of Northeast, D.C., was arrested and charged in connection with Black's death. According to prosecutors, Wilson was one of several individuals who exited a white Chevy SUV and opened fire. While Wilson was apprehended, authorities have indicated that other individuals involved in the shooting have yet to be captured.
Dearay Wilson was initially charged with second-degree murder while armed. The charges were later updated to include first-degree murder while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. In court proceedings, it was revealed that DNA evidence linked Wilson to shell casings found at the scene. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. As of late 2024, the legal process was ongoing.
