In the light of a Friday afternoon, the peace in a Northeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood was broken by the sound of gunfire. On March 8, 2024, at approximately 12:09 p.m., officers from the Fifth District were called to the 1200 block of Mount Olivet Road, Northeast. There, in an alley situated between a restaurant and a liquor store, they discovered a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was 46-year-old Jimmy Thomas Jr., a resident of Northeast, DC.
Despite the arrival of emergency services, his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of Jimmy Thomas Jr. moved swiftly. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch identified a suspect the very same day. The suspect, 27-year-old Damon Clark, also a resident of Northeast, DC, was arrested and initially charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed. According to court documents and witness testimony, the fatal shooting was the culmination of an argument between Clark and Thomas. Surveillance video later played in court showed Clark shooting Thomas after the argument. In a significant development, Clark turned himself in to the police and cooperated with the investigation.
The legal process that followed saw Damon Clark accept a plea agreement. In exchange for prosecutors not seeking an indictment on the initial murder charge, Clark pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter while armed. During the sentencing hearing, the court heard emotional testimony from Thomas's family. His mother described him as a 'good son, a happy son' who was active in his church. A letter from his daughter, who was eight months pregnant when he was killed, expressed her profound trauma and loss, noting how her father had been excited to become a grandfather. His sister stated that Thomas 'did not deserve to die' and was 'a friend to many.' After expressing remorse for his actions, Damon Clark was sentenced to 11-and-a-half years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release.
