On a Monday evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of Jerry Edward Lewis Jr., a 43-year-old man, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded on March 11, 2024, in the Titusville neighborhood, where Lewis was discovered unresponsive inside a vehicle at the intersection of 4th Street West and Center Street Southwest. He had sustained a single gunshot wound.
Birmingham police and fire rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene around 6:00 p.m. following reports of a person shot.
Upon their arrival, they found Lewis, who was pronounced dead at the location.
The initial investigation suggested that the shooting had occurred about two blocks away from where Lewis's vehicle was found. Following the shooting, Lewis had attempted to drive away before his vehicle came to a rest. Detectives from the Birmingham Police Department launched a homicide investigation, diligently working to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
Through their investigative efforts, authorities were able to identify a suspect in the case. Less than 24 hours after the shooting, on the morning of March 12, 2024, officers with the Community Safety Partnership and the Crime Reduction Team located and apprehended 63-year-old Marty Persons. Persons was taken into custody in the 700 block of 1st Street North. Following an interview with detectives, Persons was booked into the Jefferson County Jail and formally charged with the murder of Jerry Edward Lewis Jr.
