In the summer of 2008, a wave of grief washed over a Birmingham, Alabama family and community. Jason Dior Showers, a 20-year-old male, was killed on July 5, 2008, his life abruptly cut short by an act of gun violence. He was not the only one to perish in the incident; another young man, Willie D. Daniels, who was the same age, also lost his life.

The shooting prompted an investigation by the Birmingham Police Department, which eventually led to arrests in the double homicide. The names of ...
