In the East Birmingham neighborhood, on a Thursday afternoon, an altercation at a car wash tragically cut short the life of 27-year-old Detraio Deshawn Whorton. The incident, which unfolded on February 25, 2021, at the intersection of 1st Avenue and Parkway East, escalated from a verbal dispute to gunfire.
According to the preliminary investigation conducted by the Birmingham Police Department, Mr. Whorton had exited his vehicle and became engaged in an argument with another individual.
As tensions flared, shots were fired, and Mr. Whorton was struck. He managed to return to his vehicle, where he collapsed in the driver's seat.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, but despite their efforts, Mr. Whorton succumbed to his injuries. Following an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office later ruled the death of Detraio Whorton to be a justifiable homicide. As a result of this determination, no criminal charges were filed, and no arrests were made in connection with the fatal shooting.
