In the late evening hours of July 29, 2024, tragedy struck at a Chevron gas station on 3rd Avenue West in Birmingham, Alabama. Ladarrius Kennedy, a 31-year-old Black male, was found unresponsive on the sidewalk, the victim of a gunshot wound. The incident, which occurred at approximately 10:50 p.m., prompted a swift response from Birmingham police officers and emergency medical personnel.
Kennedy was quickly transported to UAB Hospital for urgent medical attention.
For eight days, Kennedy fought for his life, but his injuries proved to be too severe. On August 6, 2024, he succumbed to the gunshot wound, and what began as an aggravated assault case turned into a homicide investigation for the Birmingham Police Department. His death marked the city's 85th homicide of the year.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, officers apprehended a suspect near the historic Rickwood Field. The individual was identified as 36-year-old Justin Hall. Initially, Hall was charged with attempted murder and booked into the Jefferson County Jail with a bond set at $100,000. Following Kennedy's death, the charges against Hall were upgraded to murder. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting, but they did acknowledge that tips from the community were instrumental in the swift arrest of the suspect.
