On a Wednesday afternoon in late January, the life of Roman Gonzalez, a 48-year-old Hispanic man, was abruptly and violently cut short. It was January 25, 2023, and Gonzalez was diligently at work, renovating a house in the Ensley neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. The day was shattered by the sound of gunfire, and when the chaos subsided, Gonzalez had been fatally wounded.
