On January 4, 2023, 37-year-old Cortez Dekelvin Ware was fatally shot at the Elyton Meat Market in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was employed as a butcher. The incident occurred around 2:02 p.m. at 301 Center Street North. Responding officers found Ware lying in front of the store, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced deceased at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel.
