Demetrius Duante Harris, a 42-year-old Black male, died on June 8, 2023, in Birmingham, Alabama, following a shooting incident. The event that led to his death unfolded around 11:45 p.m. in the 1600 block of 18th Place North.
Birmingham police officers were initially dispatched to a small apartment building in the area where they discovered Harris suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Shortly after, another call came in regarding a man with a gunshot injury at a nearby gas station.
Investigators quickly determined that the two incidents were connected.
According to the investigation, Harris and the other man had been involved in an argument that escalated into an exchange of gunfire. Both men were injured in the shootout. The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office later reviewed the case and ruled that the shooting death of Demetrius Duante Harris was a justifiable homicide. As a result of this determination, no charges were filed against the other individual involved in the incident, and consequently, there were no arrests or suspects sought by law enforcement.
