On April 9, 2023, 21-year-old Martinez Laudell Smith of Birmingham, Alabama, was fatally shot during a violent altercation at a private event center near Legion Field. The incident occurred around 2:40 a.m. when Birmingham Police Department officers, patrolling the area, heard gunfire and responded to the 200 block of 8th Avenue West.
