On April 23, 2023, at approximately 1:15 a.m., an off-duty Birmingham Police Department officer working at a nightclub in the 100 block of 3rd Avenue North heard gunfire nearby. Upon investigation, the officer discovered 25-year-old Ryan Colby Johnson lying near a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and transported Johnson to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was later pronounced deceased.
