On the evening of Thursday, April 6, 2023, a sense of grim familiarity washed over the 1400 block of Brighton Road in Birmingham, Alabama. Responding to a call of a person shot at approximately 9:30 PM, West Precinct officers arrived to a scene that would soon become another homicide investigation in the city. Inside a vehicle, they discovered 47-year-old Anthony Darniel Knight, a Black male, unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel were dispatched to the location, but their efforts were in vain as Knight was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation into the shooting painted a chilling picture of a targeted attack. Detectives believe that Knight was followed for a number of miles before the fatal encounter. It is thought that an unknown vehicle pulled alongside Knight's car, and an occupant, or occupants, opened fire, riddling his vehicle with bullets. The assailant or assailants then fled the scene, leaving behind a community to grapple with another act of violence.
In the wake of the shooting, the Birmingham Police Department issued a public plea for information that could lead to an arrest. Authorities have emphasized that they believe Knight was intentionally targeted, though a motive for the shooting has not been released to the public.
