In the late hours of December 23, 2023, the life of 43-year-old David Wayne Nicholas, a white male, was violently cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. What began as a brutal assault inside a residence on Lake Lane Northeast, escalated into a desperate plea for help and ultimately, his death in the early moments of Christmas Eve. Nicholas, suffering from at least one gunshot wound and other injuries, managed to escape his attackers and sought aid from a neighbor, but tragically succumbed to his
injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel just before 1:00 a.m.
The harrowing events of that night were not a random act of violence. Investigators quickly determined that Nicholas and his girlfriend were the targets of a planned attack. While Nicholas was fatally wounded, his girlfriend was kidnapped and subjected to a terrifying ordeal that included being stripped and beaten. She was later found in a vehicle with one of the suspects in a Walmart parking lot.
The investigation led to the swift apprehension of three individuals. Dustin Stanfield, 43, Joshua Guthrie, 33, and Brittany Patterson, 33, were arrested in connection with the crimes. The two male suspects were taken into custody on December 24, 2023, while Patterson was arrested on December 30. All three face charges of capital murder and first-degree kidnapping. Court documents allege that the trio intended to abduct, injure, or sexually violate both Nicholas and his girlfriend. In July 2024, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted Stanfield, Guthrie, and Patterson on these charges, though a trial date has not yet been set.
