Omari Sharad Pollnitz, a 38-year-old Black man from Birmingham, Alabama, died on April 28, 2019, after gunfire erupted at a west Birmingham car detailing business where the evening had seemed ordinary only moments before. As daylight faded, officers were alerted to shots fired near the 2800 block of Bessemer Road, and when they arrived they found Pollnitz unresponsive at the doorway of the shop, struck by at least one gunshot.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him dead at the scene, and homicide detectives began working the case around the business on the corner near Bessemer Road and 30th Street in the Ensley/Fairview area.
In the first hours, the scene offered more questions than answers. Investigators treated it as a homicide investigation, moving through the shop and the surrounding area, trying to reconstruct who had been standing where and what set the confrontation in motion. Early reports emphasized that no suspect had been taken into custody, even as detectives worked to identify anyone who might have seen or heard the critical moments that led to the shooting.
Friends and those who knew Pollnitz described him as living with the aftermath of earlier violence; he used a wheelchair due to a previous gunshot injury, a detail that sharpened the tragedy for many who followed the case. The investigation, however, focused less on his past and more on the immediate chain of events inside the doorway of the detail shop—why the gun came out, who fired, and whether the law would view the shooting as a crime or as something else entirely.
As detectives gathered statements, the case moved from the street to the review process that often decides whether an arrest will follow. Police indicated that the other person involved in the deadly encounter was identified and interviewed, and investigators presented what they had collected to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors ultimately ruled the shooting justified, meaning no criminal charges were filed in connection with Pollnitz’s death, and there were no arrests announced stemming from the incident.
