In what was described as a senseless act of violence, Stevie McGee, a 39-year-old man, was tragically killed in a mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama. On the night of July 13th, McGee was at a birthday party at the Trendsetters lounge when gunfire erupted, claiming his life and the lives of three other individuals. At least ten other people were injured in the incident.
His sister described him as a loving and kind person who was a homebody but always made an effort to be there for the people he cared about. She believes he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The investigation into the mass shooting led to the arrests of two suspects, Damien McDaniel, 22, and Hatarius Woods, 27. Both men were subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of Stevie McGee and the other three victims, Lerandus Anderson, 24, Markeisha Gettings, 42, and Angela Weatherspoon, 56. The arrests brought a sense of closure to McGee's family, who were preparing for their first holiday season without him. His sister expressed that receiving the news of the arrests was the 'best birthday gift ever' under the circumstances.
Authorities have indicated that McDaniel and Woods may be connected to a significant number of other violent crimes in the city. At a press conference, police stated that the two men are believed to be responsible for approximately 30% of the homicides in Birmingham between July and September of that year. McDaniel, in particular, has been linked to as many as 11 murders and faces upwards of 40 charges related to various violent incidents, including another mass shooting. Both suspects are being held in the Jefferson County jail with no bond.
