On May 22, 2023, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to a house fire in the 4400 block of Old Lewisburg Road. Upon extinguishing the flames, firefighters discovered the body of 25-year-old Rodney Maurice Walker Jr., a resident of Cottondale, Alabama. An autopsy later revealed that Walker had been shot prior to the fire, leading authorities to classify his death as a homicide.
