On the evening of July 15, 2023, 62-year-old Daryl Maurice Jones and his close friend, 71-year-old Lee Ross, were enjoying their routine weekend gathering in the backyard of a residence on the 1700 block of 48th Street in Birmingham's Ensley neighborhood. The two men, known for their camaraderie and love of cooking, were suddenly attacked around 11:15 p.m. when an unknown assailant opened fire, striking both men multiple times.
