In the late afternoon of a December day in Birmingham, Alabama, a dispute over a meal at a local restaurant tragically escalated, leaving one man dead. Ricardo Tafoya Garcia, a 30-year-old male, was fatally shot on Saturday, December 16, 2023, inside the Pita Stop located in the city's Southside. The incident stemmed from a disagreement with the restaurant's owner, Matt Islam, concerning payment for food.
According to reports, Garcia claimed he had already paid his bill, a statement that
Islam contested. The argument intensified, leading to a physical altercation. Islam reported to authorities that Garcia attacked him, and feeling his life was in danger, he retrieved a firearm and shot Garcia.
