On December 16, 2023, 30-year-old Ricardo Tafoya Garcia was fatally shot at The Pita Stop restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama. The incident occurred around noon when Garcia, a customer, became involved in a verbal dispute with the restaurant's owner, Mohammad "Matt" Islam, over payment for services. The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation, during which Islam retrieved a firearm and shot Garcia. Emergency responders transported Garcia to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
