Marcus Hill, 59, a Black male from Brookside, was killed on November 7, 2023, after a shooting at the Parkway Inn motel, also identified in later records as the Roadway Inn & Suites, at 9225 Parkway East in Birmingham’s Roebuck area. Police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue were sent there just before noon on a report of a person shot, and when officers reached the third-floor balcony, they found Hill lying unresponsive with a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the case became Birmingham’s 105th murder investigation of 2023. Early reporting said investigators were still trying to sort out why he was there and whether he had been staying at the motel.
What emerged first was the outline of a confrontation. According to Birmingham police, the preliminary investigation indicated Hill had gotten into an altercation with another man, that both men pulled guns, and that shots were fired. In the first hours after the killing, police said no one was in custody, leaving the case hanging in that familiar uncertainty that settles over many Birmingham homicide scenes: a body on a balcony, a few known facts, and the larger story still out of reach.
The case later moved beyond that initial silence. Birmingham homicide records compiled from local reporting state that Roderick Bell Christian was arrested and charged with murder in Hill’s death. Jefferson County jail records show Christian, listed there as Roderick Dewayne Christian with Roderick Bell Christian as an alias, was booked on January 22, 2024, on a murder charge tied to an offense date of November 7, 2023, under docket number 202300190, and remained listed as a pretrial inmate with no bond amount shown. I did not find reliable online reporting in the sources reviewed showing a public trial, conviction, or final court disposition in Marcus Hill’s case, so the clearest online trail points to an arrest and murder charge, but not yet to a publicly documented resolution.
