In the early morning of July 12, 2023, a violent intrusion shattered the typical routine at Birmingham Fire Station 9. A gunman walked into the station's open bay and opened fire on two firefighters who had just begun their shift. The attack was brutally efficient, leaving both men critically wounded. One of the victims was Jordan Melton, a 29-year-old male firefighter who, despite having been with the department for over a year, had just graduated from the recruit academy a month prior.
His colleague, Jamal Jones, was also severely injured but survived the ambush. Both men were rushed to UAB Hospital for emergency treatment. Five days later, on July 17, 2023, Jordan Melton succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence but a targeted attack. Court documents later revealed a chilling motive: Melton was allegedly killed because he was a subpoenaed witness in a murder trial. The crime, as stated in a criminal complaint, 'stemmed from, was caused by, or was related to the capacity or role of Jordan Ellis Melton as said witness.' The investigation into what police described as one of the most horrific crime scenes in the city's recent history spanned several months, as the community and Melton's family waited for answers and justice.
The breakthrough in the case came with the identification of multiple suspects. In February 2025, Birmingham police announced that 22-year-old Damien McDaniel had been charged with the capital murder of a first responder for killing Melton and the attempted murder of Jamal Jones. The charges against McDaniel were part of a much larger, violent crime spree, as he was implicated in a total of 14 murders, including two mass shootings, over a 14-month period. A month later, in March 2025, a second suspect, 47-year-old Eddie Jerry Jones, was arrested and also charged with capital murder of a first responder. Charging documents accuse Eddie Jones of providing McDaniel with Melton's identity and location, directly enabling the fatal ambush at the fire station. Both men are being held without bond as the investigation remains ongoing.
